Chapter 11
Samuel rarely humbled himself like this, but he had no choice—if he wanted to find Emily.
Thankfully, once the company confirmed that Emily was indeed missing, they agreed to his request.
He got what he wanted: access to Emily’s social media account.
Emily had drawn her profile picture herself. Paired with her username, it gave off a feeling of pleasant simplicity and quiet serenity.
Emily wasn’t much of a talker in real life, but surprisingly, she had kept a detailed record of her life over the years. She was one of the earliest users of the platform, and her first post was from when she and Samuel had just started dating: "We started dating!"
She’d included a smiling emoticon that was all the rage back then. It looked a bit outdated now, but Samuel smiled at the sight of it anyway. Though the post was many years old, her joy had been so genuine that he could still feel it through the screen.
Emily seemed to love sharing pieces of her life. She posted her sketches while practicing art, the gifts he gave her when they were dating, her wedding bouquet, even the flowerbeds she lovingly tended after they got married.
As Samuel scrolled through her posts, his heart softened, melting into a puddle of regret.
But then—her posts suddenly stopped. No more pictures. No more pieces of her.

The last update had been a photo of the night sky from their rooftop swing—posted half a year ago.
Had something happened then?
Samuel wracked his memory. Then it hit him. That was shortly after his affair with Jessica began. He had thought he was careful, thought he’d kept it all hidden.
But Emily had found out. Regret surged within him, sharp and consuming. Trembling, he scrolled to the final post Emily had made—uploaded just last night.
"It ends here."
She hadn’t left any other clues. But Samuel knew those words were for him. That period at the end didn’t just signal the end of a sentence—it marked the end of their relationship.
Samuel spent the entire day in a daze. That night, the once cozy home felt like an icy prison. He lay in bed alone, hollowed out. His phone lit up repeatedly with messages from Jessica, inviting him out—but he didn’t even open them. Though he stayed in bed for hours, he couldn’t fall asleep.

Eventually, he gave up. He turned on the bedside lamp and slid over to Emily’s side of the bed, desperate to feel the warmth she might have left behind. Surely she must’ve slept here last night… right? He let himself get lost in that thought. He tried to remember the last time they’d shared a bed. But the cold in his chest only deepened—colder than the silk sheets beneath him.
Years ago, when he and Emily had just graduated, they couldn’t afford luxuries like silk sheets. They used to huddle together under rough linen to stay warm.
Now, he missed her more than he could bear. His heart clenched painfully, as if someone had it in a vice grip.
The midnight alarm jolted him back to reality. And then he remembered—Emily had left something behind: that exquisite-looking jewelry box. He rushed to the dressing table and picked it up. It fit perfectly in his palm.
But when he opened it, there was no jewelry inside. Just a small, oddly shaped piece of silver At first, he didn’t understand. Why would she give him this? Out of habit, he began rubbing his wedding ring—the one he’d crafted himself. And then the realization hit him like lightning. The silver piece in the box was Emily’s wedding ring. She had melted it down. There is no greater sorrow than a numb heart.
At last, Samuel understood: Emily hadn’t left on a whim. She wasn’t throwing a tantrum. She was never coming back. Samuel could no longer sit still. He drove straight to the police station. Bursting through the door, he gasped, “I—I want to file a missing person report. My wife is missing. She might… she might try to take her own life!”
As an adult, Emily had every right to disappear without notice. If Samuel wanted the police to help, he needed a compelling reason. Otherwise, they could refuse.
This time, the reason was enough. The police took his case seriously and stayed up all night trying to locate Emily—but to no avail.
Officer Kate Clark, an experienced female detective, asked him, “Did you and your wife have a fight recently?”
“No. Our relationship’s been fine,” Samuel replied evasively.
But Kate wasn’t fooled. She gave him a long, knowing look. “If you truly want us to find your wife,” she said calmly, “you’ll need to tell us the truth. If not… we won’t be able to help you.”
