Chapter 27: Cracks in the Throne
Jason slammed the newspaper down on his desk, his knuckles white against the wood. The article he had planted was supposed to be the finishing blow, but instead… it had crowned Amara even higher.
His phone buzzed with alerts. Investors were pulling out. His own allies were questioning his judgment. His name was still in the headlines, but now it was followed by words like “desperate” and “pathetic.”
He stared at the city skyline through his office window, jaw tight. How had she flipped this on me? How had she turned my weapon into her victory?
Jason poured himself a drink, but the burn of whiskey didn’t calm him. For the first time, he felt it — not anger, not even jealousy. Fear. Fear that the empire he had built on dominance and intimidation was beginning to crack.

Meanwhile, Amara and Darius’s faces filled every trending feed. Clips of her speech at The Crown Table were being shared like wildfire. Young women tagged her name with words like “icon,” “queen,” and “voice we needed.”
And Jason watched it all from the shadows of his office, his teeth grinding. He thought he had destroyed her. Instead, she had become untouchable.
But Jason wasn’t finished. His pride wouldn’t let him be. He poured another drink and whispered to the empty room,
“This isn’t over, Amara. You may think you’ve won. But I still have cards to play.”
The night answered him with silence.
