Love Scatters, Hearts Break

Love Scatters, Hearts Break

Chapter 19

The papers littered across the floor were from the same set Emily had used to leave her final note. Samuel had brought every unused sheet from the study into the bedroom, and for days, he’d written on them endlessly. Time had lost all meaning.

Nora stood there sobbing.

“Emily doesn’t even want to see you! Even if you fill the room with apology letters, what good will it do? You need to tell her you're sorry in person.”

Samuel paused, as if seriously considering her words. He knew she was right. But he was too far gone, too consumed by guilt to stop now. His bloodshot eyes met hers.

“She’ll know,” he said, voice cracked but fervent. “Once I fill every sheet, she’ll forgive me. I need to show her how sincere I am…”

Before either parent could say more, Samuel abruptly snatched the paper back from Fred and continued scribbling. His hand trembled, but he wrote with desperate focus.

“I made a mistake, Emily. You’ll forgive me, right? If I fill all these pages, you’ll come back… I’m sorry…” He mumbled over and over, stuck in a haunting cycle of remorse.

Nora, watching her son spiral like a man possessed, wept helplessly. “Please… I’m begging you. Eat something. Rest. You’ll die if this goes on,” she pleaded.

But Samuel didn’t even seem to hear her.

Seeing that reasoning wouldn’t work, Fred finally stepped in. “If you truly want to apologize, then let her hear you! There’s a new TV show about missing persons. Sign up. You can tell her how sorry you are in front of the whole world.”

It was one of the highest-rated shows on TV.

Given Samuel’s status as a wealthy CEO and the scandalous story behind Emily’s disappearance, the production team jumped at the chance to feature him.

Samuel immediately signed up—and even funded the show to guarantee he’d be the next guest.

As soon as word got out, buzz spread across social media. The production team amplified the drama for publicity. When taping began, the studio was packed. Even the host looked stunned by Samuel’s hollow, grief-stricken appearance.

Although Samuel cleaned up for the show—wearing the first necktie Emily had ever bought him—his exhaustion was still evident. His eyes were sunken, and his expression lost.

The host began gently, trying to ease into the topic. But Samuel didn’t bother with niceties. He looked into the camera and began:

“I’m here to apologize to my wife, Emily Anderson. I made a terrible mistake. When we first fell in love, I promised we’d grow old together without losing that love. But I failed. I gave in to temptation. I betrayed her.” He choked up but pressed on. “I’m the reason our marriage broke down. Emily left because of what I did. I’m here today because I want to beg her forgiveness…” His raw confession silenced the room. Viewers across the country watched as Samuel, once seen as a picture-perfect husband, laid bare his guilt.

The episode went viral. Discussion forums exploded. Old photos of Emily’s artwork resurfaced. Jessica, the woman at the center of the affair, was also exposed and criticized heavily.

But there was still no sign of Emily.

Refusing to give up, Samuel called Luke.

“Our company site has a video section, right? Upload the clip from the program.”

“To the main company site or a subsidiary?” Luke asked cautiously.

“All of them. Every website we run.” He wasn’t done. “Buy up ad space—everywhere. Social media, news sites, local and international. I want her to see it, no matter where she is.”

“And... your contact info?” Luke asked hesitantly.

“Put my personal number on every post.”

Though Samuel knew this would damage both his reputation and the company’s image, none of that mattered anymore. If Emily could just see how broken he was, maybe she’d respond.

Days passed. Still nothing. He left his phone on, volume turned all the way up, waiting for her call.

Finally, it rang.

“Is it true you’re offering a reward for information about the missing woman?” a stranger asked.

“Yes,” Samuel replied instantly.

“Well then, give me \$100,000, and I’ll tell you where I saw her yesterday.”

“You saw her?” Samuel’s voice surged with desperate hope.

“That’s right. Now hurry up and make the transfer…”

Samuel wired the money without hesitation.
