Chapter 33: Shadows Cast by the Crown
Amara stood at the balcony of her boutique’s loft office, the city skyline glowing beneath the night sky. For once, she felt a sliver of peace. The Rise Again Fund had been a success, and the messages flooding in weren’t whispers of doubt anymore — they were cheers of gratitude.
Darius joined her, slipping an arm around her waist. “You’re changing lives, Amara. That’s bigger than any headline Jason can print.”
She leaned into him, allowing herself to breathe. “Sometimes I wonder if I’m ready for all of this, Darius. The attention. The responsibility. The crown feels heavier every day.”
He kissed her temple softly. “Heavy is the crown, but it fits you. Never forget that.”

But across town, Jason sat in a dimly lit restaurant, a predator plotting his next strike. A private investigator slid a folder across the table, its contents thick with photographs.
Jason flipped through the images: Amara stepping out of a car with Darius, Amara hugging a young male employee at her boutique, Amara laughing with a male client at the gala.
Jason’s lips curled into a cruel smile. “Perfect. If they want a scandal, I’ll give them one. Let’s make her look like she’s been using every man she meets. The faithful ex-wife, now the faithless queen.”
The investigator raised a brow. “You’re talking about fabrication, Jason. It’ll be obvious—”
Jason cut him off sharply. “It doesn’t need to be true. It just needs to be loud.”
As Amara drifted to sleep that night, comforted by Darius’s steady presence, Jason’s trap was already being set. A scandal built not on fact, but on shadows.
And when morning came, those shadows would spread.
