Chapter 17: The Storm After Midnight
The gala ended in a blur of flashing cameras and champagne-soaked goodbyes. By the time Amara and Darius reached her penthouse, thunder cracked across the city, rain pounding against the windows like fists.
She slipped out of her heels, sighing. “He’s not going to stop, Darius. Jason will keep clawing until he draws blood.”
Darius loosened his tie, his gaze sharp. “Then let him bleed himself dry trying. You’re not alone in this.”

But Amara wasn’t convinced. Jason’s latest stunt — leaking false invoices suggesting her boutique laundered money — had already made headlines. Though the Crown Table dismissed it as rubbish, the whispers lingered.
The storm outside grew wild, lightning casting sharp shadows across the room. Amara stood at the window, her reflection trembling in the glass. “What if they start to believe him?”
Darius came behind her, arms circling her waist, grounding her. “Then I’ll fight harder. For you. With you. Always.”
His voice was a vow against the storm. When he turned her toward him and kissed her, the thunder faded, the lightning dimmed. For a heartbeat, there was only them, unshaken, undefeated, unbreakable.
The storm could rage as loud as it wanted. Inside their arms, there was only calm.
