Chapter 18: The Poisoned Gift
It arrived in the morning, a velvet box, small, elegant, with a note that simply read: For old times’ sake.
Amara frowned as she opened it. Inside lay a diamond bracelet, one Jason had once promised her during their marriage but never delivered. Beside it, a photograph: her face photoshopped into an image of her embracing another man. Below it, scrawled in Jason’s handwriting: You’ll never be clean enough for him.
Her stomach twisted, but anger replaced the nausea. She tossed the bracelet onto the table as if it were cursed.
When Darius walked in, he scanned the scene, his expression darkening. “Jason.”
“Yes,” Amara said flatly. “He thinks he can rattle me with ghosts and lies.”
She took the photograph, ripped it into pieces, and dropped it into the trash. Then she turned to Darius, fire in her eyes. “I told you before, I trust you. Now I’ll add this: I trust myself too. He no longer has power over me.”

For the first time, Darius smiled, not the calm, restrained kind, but a smile full of pride. “That’s my queen.”
The poisoned gift had failed. Instead of breaking her, it had made her stronger — a reminder that her past could never chain her again.
