Chapter 25 — Behind the Clouds
They dedicated the lab on a clear morning, clouds stacked like ships over the horizon, sunlight lying warm on new-painted walls. A hand-lettered sign over the door read: Barometer House.
Inside, tables held donated laptops, salvaged instruments, and a scatter of notebooks. Rhea stood with a box of weather balloons. Jax recorded but didn’t intrude. Kids craned their necks to see the Doppler feed Amara had wired to a simple display.
She spoke without a script. “Weather is not the enemy,” she said. “Ignorance is. So is greed. We’re here to learn the language of the sky and to teach it to anyone who wants to listen.”
She told them about listening before measuring and measuring until people had to listen. She showed them how a pressure drop feels in your sinuses, how wind talks if you stand still long enough, how data is a way to make care legible.
Kelechi arrived late, walking out into the sunlight with her between sessions, his sentence deferred pending formal cooperation. He looked older and lighter both. “You staying?” he asked.
She looked at the street, at the ridge, at the river lifting and setting itself down again in its new channel, honest in daylight. “Yes,” she said. “For a while. For as long as it takes.”
They launched a weather balloon from the schoolyard. It rose, bright as a second moon, carrying a small payload that would whisper the sky’s measurements back to Barometer House. The town watched it climb. Some made wishes, because that’s what humans do when something ascends.
Amara shaded her eyes. The balloon drifted into a thin veil of cloud and emerged on the other side, shining. Behind it, the cloud’s edge lifted like a curtain.
She thought of her mother’s journal, the last line, the shape of the handwriting softened by rain and time. The sky is trying to tell us something.
“Let’s keep listening,” she said.
And for once, she looked up without bracing, and let the light find her.
