Chapter 61: A Trap in the Dark

The deeper they chased the remaining threads, the clearer it became — someone was still pulling strings. The last of the mastermind’s loyalists weren’t just hiding; they were preparing something.

“They’re not scattering anymore,” the traitor muttered, scanning a cluster of intercepted messages. “They’re converging. That’s not retreat — that’s coordination.”

Lila’s heart tightened. “Then it’s a trap. They’re gathering for one final strike.”

Damien’s jaw set like stone. “We can’t pull back now. If we give them time to reorganize, everything we’ve done will unravel. We go in, but carefully — every step calculated.”

The teams split into smaller units, moving silently through the labyrinth of forgotten tunnels beneath the city. Each step was deliberate. Each breath, controlled. Every shadow felt alive with threat.

Then the silence shattered. Explosions ripped through the tunnels behind them, sealing exits and cutting off retreat.

“It’s a trap!” one of the operatives shouted over the comms.

Lila grabbed her earpiece. “Regroup! Defensive formation, now!”

But the enemy had anticipated their every move. Floodlights burst on, revealing figures in masks — not scattered loyalists, but an organized, armed force.

“Welcome to the endgame,” a voice echoed through the chamber — distorted, mocking, but unmistakably familiar.

Damien’s eyes narrowed. “They’ve been waiting for us.”

And as the first shot rang out, the hunters realized they were no longer chasing shadows. The shadows had come for them.
