The Whisper

Chapter 62: Blood and Betrayal

Gunfire echoed through the tunnels like thunder, each shot a heartbeat closer to disaster. Lila and Damien moved in perfect sync, guiding their teams through the chaos. This was no scattered resistance — it was an ambush planned with precision.

“Fall back to cover!” Damien shouted, pulling an injured operative behind a concrete barrier. “We regroup and push back on my signal!”

“They knew we were coming,” Lila hissed, reloading her weapon. “They knew everything.”

“Which means someone told them,” Damien growled. “We have a leak.”

The traitor — the man who had claimed to defect to their side — was nowhere to be seen. Panic flickered in Lila’s chest.

“Where is he?” she demanded over comms. “Has anyone seen him?”

No one had.

And then, through the haze of smoke and gunfire, he appeared — not beside them, but across the battlefield, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the enemy.

“You trusted me too easily,” his voice boomed through the chamber’s PA system. “Did you really think betrayal runs only one way?”

Rage burned behind Lila’s eyes. “You played us.”

“I studied you,” he corrected coldly. “Every plan, every weakness, every blind spot — and now, I finish what was started.”

The revelation hit Damien like a punch to the gut, but there was no time to dwell. The loyalists surged forward, their assault intensifying now that the truth was laid bare.

“New orders!” Damien barked. “We fight our way out. No hesitation. No mercy.”

Lila steadied her weapon, her voice trembling not from fear but fury. “We end this. One way or another.”

The betrayal had cut deep — but it also lit a fire. And as the hunters pushed back with renewed ferocity, the battlefield shifted from survival to vengeance.
