The Whisper

Chapter 63: The Collapse

The tunnels had become a war zone. Smoke hung thick in the air, the stench of gunpowder and blood mingling into something primal. Lila and Damien fought side by side, each movement instinctive — dodge, fire, cover, advance.

But the betrayal had changed everything. The enemy wasn’t just attacking — they were anticipating. Every formation, every fallback point, every coded phrase they used was met with a counter.

“They know our tactics,” Damien growled, ducking as a burst of bullets ricocheted off the stone. “He gave them everything.”

“And we’re running out of time,” Lila replied, voice steady despite the chaos. “If we stay boxed in here, they’ll wipe us out.”

“Then we don’t stay,” Damien said, eyes locking with hers. “We break their formation — now.”

A sharp whistle cut through the noise, and on his signal, their team shifted tactics. Instead of holding ground, they surged forward with relentless aggression. Grenades exploded against barricades, creating choke points for the enemy. Smoke grenades blinded shooters, buying precious seconds.

“Push left flank!” Lila shouted. “If we can break through, we can regroup topside!”

But as they advanced, the traitor’s voice echoed through the speakers again, dripping with smug satisfaction.

“You’re still thinking like hunters,” he taunted. “But you’re the hunted now. And this tunnel? It’s your grave.”

The ground beneath them rumbled. A deep, low groan reverberated through the chamber — then the ceiling above them cracked. Chunks of stone crashed down as dust and darkness swallowed the corridor.

“Fall back! It’s collapsing!” Damien yelled.

But retreat was no longer an option. The exits were sealed, the walls crumbling. Their enemy wasn’t just trying to kill them — they were trying to bury them.

“Damien!” Lila shouted over the roar. “We need another way out!”

“There isn’t one,” he replied grimly, glancing at the map on his wrist display. “Unless…”

His gaze fell to a maintenance shaft deeper inside the enemy’s position — risky, narrow, and almost certainly a trap.

Lila followed his eyes and nodded. “It’s a chance.”

“It’s our only chance,” Damien said.

And with that, the hunters plunged deeper into the collapsing tunnels. not away from danger, but straight into the lion’s den.
