“Back when you became infertile,” Nathan said coldly, “I endured ninety-nine lashes from the family punishment whip to stay with you.” He took a step forward, eyes glinting with cruelty.
“Today, if you can kneel for ninety-nine steps—kowtowing once for each step in atonement to my children—I’ll agree to divorce you.”
My breath caught.
Then I lowered myself to the ground.
“One.”
My forehead slammed against the stone. Stars burst behind my eyes. Blood smeared across the concrete.
Behind me, Lily’s desperate screams echoed like knives.
“Mommy, no! Please stop!”
I didn’t dare turn around. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to go on if I saw the terror in her eyes.
Wendy’s syrupy voice floated through the tension. “Nathan, that’s enough… she’s bleeding.”
But Nathan cut her off, sharp and cold.
“Let her kneel.”
By the fifth step, blood streamed from my forehead, soaking my eyebrows and lashes. My knees were raw. My body trembled with each crawl forward.
And then—Clap. Clap. Clap. A crisp sound cut through the hushed crowd. Gasps followed as a tall man in a tailored black suit stepped into view. His presence was ice-cold, commanding.
"Ethan." He approached like a shadow slicing through the sun. Though younger than Nathan, he towered over him—broad-shouldered, jaw tight with fury. His voice was calm, yet sharp as a blade.
“Mr. Lu,” Ethan said, “is this how you demonstrate family discipline? By forcing your injured wife to bleed on the pavement for your pride?”
Nathan flinched. “Ethan?! This is a private Lu family matter! What are you doing here? Weren’t you studying abroad?”
Ethan’s lips curled into a smirk.
“Shall I remind your grandfather how you coveted another man’s wife?” His tone turned lethal. “Want to be shipped overseas again, Nathan?”
The crowd whispered nervously. Reporters began turning their cameras.
But Ethan didn’t wait for a reply. He walked straight to me, kneeling beside me.

“Olivia,” he said softly.
I tried to flinch away. Still, I bowed my head again.
“Six.
Ethan’s voice tightened. “Look at yourself.” He ripped off his silk tie and gently wrapped it around my bleeding forehead. His touch was careful, but firm. Protective. Unshakable. Then he turned on Nathan with burning fury. “Don’t forget,” Ethan said, voice like cracking ice, “who pulled me out of that amusement park fire six years ago.” He let the words hang like thunder in the air.
“Without her, the Pei Group would never have signed with Lu Corp. Olivia saved your reputation, your fortune, and your damn life. If it weren’t for her—your entire empire would’ve turned to ash!”
Gasps broke out.
Nathan’s face turned ghostly pale.
Reporters surged forward, cameras flashing faster now—not at me, but at **him**.
My mind drifted back to that day. That chaotic, smoke-filled afternoon. Ethan had just turned fifteen.
The precious young heir of the Pei Group had been invited to the grand opening of the Lu family’s new amusement park. The pride of Lu Corp. But everything went wrong. A faulty electrical circuit had set the haunted house ablaze. Children screamed. Guests panicked. Security couldn’t respond fast enough. Ethan had been trapped inside, alone, choking on smoke. And I—barely out of college—had run straight into the flames.
"Present day."
Ethan stood between me and Nathan like a shield. His next words rang like a promise. “She saved me once. I won’t let you destroy her now.”
