Shattered Vows, Shining Crown

Chapter 37: The Courtroom Crossfire

The marble steps of the courthouse glistened under the morning sun as Amara walked up, flanked by Darius and her lawyer, Marlene Carter — a woman whose sharp tongue was feared across three states.
Reporters swarmed, shouting questions, cameras flashing like lightning.

“Amara, are you guilty?”
“Did you steal to build your crown?”
“Is Crown Table a fraud?”

Amara didn’t stop, didn’t flinch. She lifted her chin and walked as though the questions were whispers carried off by the wind.

Inside, the courtroom buzzed with anticipation. Jason sat at the plaintiff’s table, smug in a tailored suit, his smirk daring her to collapse under the weight of his accusations.

The judge entered. Silence fell.

Jason’s lawyer rose first, painting Amara as a schemer, a woman who had clawed her way up by “robbing the very community she claimed to serve.” His words dripped with venom, and murmurs rippled through the room.

Then it was Marlene’s turn. She stood tall, her voice crisp, cutting through the air like steel.

“Ladies and gentlemen, what we have here is not fraud, but vengeance. A bitter ex-husband who cannot stand to see the woman he betrayed rise higher than him. This is not justice. This is jealousy.”

Jason’s face darkened.

Amara sat still, her hands clasped tightly on the table. Yet when her eyes flicked toward Jason, they held no fear — only fire.

The judge adjourned for recess. Outside the courtroom, Darius whispered,
“This is only the beginning. Jason wants war.”

Amara exhaled slowly, her resolve hardening.
“Then let him have it. I won’t bend. Not now, not ever.”

As the gavel prepared to fall on the next session, Amara knew this battle wasn’t just about clearing her name. It was about proving, once and for all, that no smear, no betrayal, and no courtroom trick could silence her crown.
