Chapter 10 — First Pinch—Teeth of the Antagonist

The next morning brought escalation. The Mayor’s office froze public records, citing “security concerns.” Amara’s emails bounced. At the cloud station, Rhea discovered software locks on several servers—data was confined to “authorized personnel only,” and authorization now required biometric scans.

Jax called in a panic, his podcast feed throttled, anonymous messages swarming with warnings: Look down, not up.

An SUV with tinted windows began to appear at the corners where Amara ran field checks. She snapped a photo, sent it to Rhea; Rhea replied with a satellite image of her childhood home, annotated in red.

“Whoever’s running this wants you scared,” Rhea wrote. “Stay visible, move in numbers.”

Amara filed emergency complaint paperwork, layered her findings behind online redundancies, posted a backup to a trusted colleague in the city. She watched her notifications crawl—now with warnings about “unusual account activity.”

When she walked home, she could feel eyes on her, invisible and silent as the air before a storm.
