Chapter 16
Harper thought she had been brutal enough that Callum's pride would keep him away. But when she left the hotel, she saw him again, grinning like nothing ever happened. He immediately dropped to one knee the moment he saw her, holding out the diamond ring he never got to give. "Give me one more chance to win your heart , Harper. Can we start again?" She scoffed. "How are we supposed to start over? Can you bring my baby back?
Can you put the uterus back in me?" Callum looked at her with hope written all over his face. "We could adopt a child." Right after he finished speaking, a little girl's voice rang out. "Are you leaving me behind, Mom?" Callum glanced over and saw Jace with a little girl in tow. She had two pigtails and ran straight into Harper's arms, looking all upset. He exclaimed, "You two have a kid?" He furrowed his brows in shock, but he quickly realized there was no way the little girl was her child.

Callum got to his feet, glaring at Jace. "Seriously? You've got a kid and you're still chasing after Harper? " Harper nonchalantly glanced at Callum. "What if he has a kid? Did you forget that you and Sienna have one too?" He quickly explained, "I made her get rid of the baby, and I had her uterus removed too. Whatever she did to you, I made her suffer a lot worse." She looked at him with eyes as cold as ice. "So what?
Just because she went through what I did, does that mean my pain magically disappears?" She thought she had made herself clear enough for him to give up. His face fell for a second, but he didn't give up. Instead, he pulled out a lunchbox. "Let's not dwell on the past. I know Ospen food isn't really your thing, so I made some comfort food from home. Try it." Harper replied dismissively, "I don't want it." Jace took the lunchbox, opened it, and helped himself instead of handing it to Harper.
After taking one bite, he frowned . "Your cooking could use some serious work, Mr. Colter." With a snap of his finger, a line of chefs filed in, each carrying a tray of food. "Have some too, Mr. Colter. Order what you want. Don't be shy. I booked out the whole hotel." ---- This time, Callum left with a scowl, but he still wasn't giving up. The next day, Harper stepped out of the hotel and found Callum still at it. He had been waiting for a while, holding a bouquet and a pretty flower crown.
You once said you wanted to ride down a river wearing a flower crown, Harper. I-" " Before he could finish, Sara hurried over and cut in, " What kind of flowers are those? Can I have them?" Before he could get a word in, she took advantage of her small size and snatched the flowers and crown right out of his hands. Callum held back because Harper was there. The next thing he knew, Sara had tossed them straight into the bin. She said sweetly, "Dad can find you any flowers you want, Mom.
We don't want his flowers." Seeing his thoughtful gesture go to waste lit a fire in his chest. He balled his fists, then took a deep breath and let go. He kept reminding himself not to irritate Harper. After a long pause, Callum finally managed a smile and solemnly handed Harper a pouch. "You have to accept this. I found this four-leaf clover necklace at the most popular gift shop in Ospen. Just wear it for now. When we get back home, I'll stop by a metaphysical store and get you a proper one." Jace chuckled as he came down the stairs. "Aren't you too old for this, Mr. Colter? If miracles really worked, we wouldn't need doctors." He shoved the pouch back to Callum. "Take your useless lucky charm back. Harper doesn't need it.
If she ever gets sick, I'll get the best doctor the world has to offer to treat her." Seeing Callum's darkened expression , Jace shook his head and scoffed. "I was worried for a second that Harper might fall for your tricks again, Mr. Colter . Guess I gave you too much credit. Why don't you take a look at the gift I got Harper instead?" Right after he spoke, the hotel staff came in one after another, each holding trays of stunning jewelry.
The staff member leading the group stopped in front of Harper and announced dutifully , "Mr. Winslow had all of this jewelry custom-made for you, Ms. Vaughn." Jace looked at Harper like she was the only thing that mattered. "Do you like it?" After she nodded, he picked up a necklace and put it around her neck.
Watching the scene unfold , Callum asked in a raspy ---- voice , "Since when did you start liking this kind of thing?" She ran her fingers over the gem at her neck and replied indifferently, "I'm not who I used to be." Hearing that, Callum chuckled bitterly. Tears glimmered in his eyes as he fixed his gaze on Jace. "Is that all it takes? I just need to get rid of him, and you'll be mine again, right?" Harper had a bad feeling about this. "What are you up to, Callum?" Callum didn't respond.
He smashed his fist into Jace's face. Even when the bodyguards rushed in, he kept going. He fought like he had a death wish, like he wanted to take Jace down with him. Terrified, Sara buried herself in Harper's arms and broke down in tears. Harper shouted in fury, "Do you have to wreck my life like this, Callum? Are you trying to drive me to my death?" Callum froze at her words. Nothing scared him, except the thought of Harper dying. He immediately stopped.
He was battered and bruised, but she walked right past him like he wasn't even there and checked on Jace. Listening to her showering another man with care, ---- Callum felt like his heart was being torn to shreds. She asked, ''Are you fine? Where did you get hit?" Harper's every word to Jace was filled with care. Callum walked away in silence, and that was the moment he made up his mind to start afresh and take back everything he lost.
